Teach about Earth Day with BookFlix!

BookFLix Site

On April 22nd people all over the world will be celebrating Earth Day. This holiday was created based on the idea that everyone has a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment. Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day with BookFlix :
  • Use the new pair, Joseph Has a Little Overcoat and Recycle That! to introduce students and patrons to the concept of recycling, reusing, and taking care of our environment.

  • Remind older readers that the story has a moral, or a lesson, that needs to be learned. After reading Recycle That!, ask students or patrons what they think the moral of Joseph Has a Little Overcoat is and why it relates to recycling.

  • Using the story Joseph Had a Little Overcoat as a model, and the information from the nonfiction title Recycle That!, have groups of children write a new story that features an item that is transformed many times like a plastic water or soda bottle.

  • Promote reading and reusing together by letting each child make their own book holders by cutting the top and one corner off a cereal box. Let the children paint and decorate their cereal boxes for their own book, magazine or assignment holders.

Spring is in the Air!
books
After a long winter, spring is finally here! Use the pair Planting a Rainbow and It Could Still Be A Flower to get your students or patrons excited about the warmer weather and springtime flowers. Now is the perfect time to grow a classroom or story time group garden. Have your students or patrons bring in various types of seeds that they would like to try to grow.
Plant seeds in egg cartons or other containers. Once plants are at the seedling stage, the children can either take them home to plant in their own gardens, or they can be used to create a garden on the school or library grounds.
