“Oh, the Places They’ll Go…”
SRI at Santa Cruz International School (SCIS)
SCIS turned around their English program with the help of Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)! With SRI, a computer-adaptive assessment program for measuring reading progress, teachers at SCIS were able to quickly and accurately assess reading comprehension and match students to text using the Lexile Framework® for Reading. Once student reading levels were determined, they began to read appropriate books, based on their individual levels, and test scores and student work improved. As a result, students were immediately more excited about learning.

Why Emotional Intelligence Matters
Schools are finally realizing that although test scores are important, it is critical for students to master emotional and social skills if they are going to succeed in school. Researchers have found that the five most important skills for students are the ability to name feelings, building trusting relationships, staying in control, having curiosity, and expressing gratitude. Read about each of these skills, how you can integrate them into your school’s curriculum, and what you can do to help foster the growth of these skills.
Good Morning, China
In an internationally focused society, international partnerships between schools are an option that all schools should explore. International partnerships are relatively low-cost programs that yield valuable results. These partnerships allow schools to directly collaborate with each other and learn successful tactics they might otherwise not know about. Additionally, these programs give students an opportunity to broaden their cultural and language borders. Read how Canada, Algeria, Uruguay, China, and the U.S. have succeeded with these programs in schools!
Wired Up: Tuned Out
“How can schools change to teach 21st century skills to a generation of digital-media natives?” Research has shown that children’s brains behave differently from adults. How must our schools adapt to accommodate these students? A shift from consumption (watching TV) to participation (social-networking websites) among children changes the way that they construct knowledge and develop a sense of self. Read how teachers are learning new skills to accommodate students as well as implementing changes in their classrooms.
