Room to Read: Building Global Literacy

Imagine you're a high-powered executive at one of the world's top companies. On a vacation to Nepal, you witness a disheartening display of poverty, illiteracy, and school children without access to books or other educational resources. What would you do? If you're John Wood of Microsoft, you leave your career to dedicate yourself to the cause of improving lives in the developing world. This is exactly what John did in 1999 when he founded the nonprofit organization Room to Read (RTR). Since then, via his own willpower and generous support from others, RTR has built over 5,000 libraries in Asia and Africa.

Making the Most of Differentiated Literacy Centers
It is important to remain abreast of educational concepts and frameworks in motion that other educators are adopting and implementing into their classrooms. Here's some insight into how teachers around the world are meeting the needs of all their students within their classrooms.
Proper setup and implementation of Differentiated Literacy Centers ensure that all students are working productively in a classroom while a small group meets individually with the teacher. To make sure all students are engaged and challenged, it is important to model assignments before students are assigned to work on their own. The Cycle of Support (Pearson & Gallagher, 1983) is a renowned way to introduce and enforce activities: Tell Me, Show Me, Guide Me, Coach Me.
Additionally, offering tiered/multilevel assignments guarantees that all students are appropriately challenged. Margo Southall's Differentiated Learning Centers includes research-based activities, planning sheets and record-keeping forms. All activities are leveled and will match student's varied needs for independent practice.
