IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Guided Reading at The American School in Barcelona

Room to Read The diverse student population at The American School in Barcelona (ASB) represents 45 nationalities. Unsurprisingly, this school has had to find ways to accommodate the varied English literacy needs of the their students. One particular challenge for the school was finding supplemental materials that would engage all students as well as be appropriate for students at many different reading levels.

After much deliberation, ASB selected Scholastic Guided Reading to supplement their basal program. Learn how this vast collection of carefully-leveled books accommodated the school’s needs and see how they have used these books for additional activities that captivate and include every student.

RECENT EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

Teaching Kids to be Global Citizens

Across the world schools are recognizing the importance of global awareness. A recent article in Scholastic Instructor magazine takes a look at five schools in the United States that are committed to broadening their students’ educational experience. Whether it’s learning a new language, communicating with other students worldwide, or going to visit another school and see a new place first-hand, these schools are committed to offering their students international perspective as a part of their standard education.

Lessons about simple traditions such as food and festivals are not enough to act as an international curriculum. At John Stanford International School in Seattle, Washington, Japanese and Kenyan math techniques are incorporated in the students’ math class. A challenge in the U.S. has been recognition that English alone is not enough for students. At John Stanford, students participate in half-day language immersion programs.
