Zip Zooming in Spain!
The Spanish government has recently demonstrated efforts in support of bilingual Spanish-English education in schools throughout Spain. What better place to start than primary school? And what better product to accelerate English Language development than Zip Zoom?…
Just this year, C.P. Bilingüe Ventanielles school in Spain started a pilot program of Scholastic Zip Zoom English to test the program in their school with their students. The program is designed to support beginning English-Language Learners in developing critical language and reading skills through a combination of powerful technology and groundbreaking sequential Critical-Word Readers books.
Read the full story to hear a first-hand account from Ángela Cofiño as she explains how the program was received in the school and how their students have come to truly love reading!

Plug Into Generation IM
Today’s students are undoubtedly tech-savvy. Social-networking and IM-ing are part of their daily lives. It is important for educators to bring these tools into the classroom in order to make content presented in the classroom more relevant to their students, as well as to speak the language of their students. Good news for all you educators out there — Scholastic Administrator has identified internet applications designed for specific use in schools and classrooms!
The applications and websites include social networking sites, such as Imbee, which are safe and secure for younger students. These sites give students an audience and are therefore a motivating factor for them to take more pride in the work that they post to the site. Other sites, like Moodle, assist with classroom management and allow teachers to post syllabi and assignments online for students and parents to access.

Untapped Potential

Anyone who works in a school knows that cell phones can be an extreme distraction to students. However, some companies and schools have been working to find ways to embrace them as learning tools. The Craik School, in Saskatchewan, Canada, decided to text message their eighth and ninth grade students to remind them of homework assignments and tests. Although there has been controversy over the idea of using cell phones in classrooms, other schools have experienced success with pilot programs.
GoKnow, Inc. in the U.S.A. has developed a software program that turns students’ smartphones into computers and allows them to access different programs on their phones. Essentially, students can complete assignments on their phones and then upload their work online, where teachers and parents can view it.
